Mike Vaira, a native of Coquille, Oregon, was the first major recruit for the Brandon University Bobcats in their early years under Coach Gary Howard. He played at BU from 1970 to 1975 and, in that time, he established himself as one of the top players of his time.
He finished his Bobcat career with 2,981 points in an era without the 3-point line. In 1973-74, he led the nation in scoring with 26.5 points per game and became the first Bobcat to be selected as an All-Canadian. He was also a three-time GPAC All-Star and the Brandon University Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1974. In addition, he was inducted into the Brandon University Sports Wall of Fame in 1996.
