A graduate of Sackville High School in Sackville, Nova Scotia in 1986, Tanya played her university basketball with the Winnipeg "Wesmen". A prolific scorer, she was All-Canadian in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and Great Plains Athletic Conference All-Star in 1989, 1990, and 1991. Tanya was also Conference Rookie of the Year in 1987 and Most Valuable Player in 1989.
