A graduate of Dakota Collegiate, Rick played his university basketball at the University of Manitoba. In 1974, '75, and '76, he was selected to the Great Plains Athletic Conference First-Team All-Star Team. In
1976, he was selected to the Canadian University First-Team All Canadian Team.
As a member of the Canadian University Championship U of M Bison's, he was a Tournament All-Star.
Rick was also a member of the Canadian National Team in 1973 and of the University World Student Games team in 1973.
After university, he played for Nicolett Inn which won the Canadian Senior Men's title in 1979, '80, and '82. Rick was named Tournament All-Star in 1980 and 1982.
