A graduate of St. Paul's High School, John started playing in the Senior League with the Legion in the 1949-50 season, winning the Rookie-of-the-Year Award. The next year, he began playing for St. Andrews until the end of the 1959 season. In 1954, he was named League All-Star and Most Valuable Player.
