Joan started playing competitive basketball in Flin Flon. She was a key player on the Flin Flon "Legionettes" which won the Manitoba Junior Championships in 1948, 1949, and 1950. In 1950, her high school team also won the Provincial High School Championships.
Moving to Winnipeg, Joan was a key player for the Winnipeg "Dominoes" that won the Senior Ladies' Provincial Championship in 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1955. In 1953, the "Dominoes" were also Eastern Canada Champions. During this time, Joan was a perennial All-Star and MVP.
