A graduate of Norwood Collegiate, Jim played in the Junior League for two years. In his first year, he was Rookie of the Year, League All-Star, League Scoring Champion, and the League's Most Valuable
Player. The following year, he repeated as League All-Star and MVP.
The next year, Jim joined the U of M "Bisons". During his three years as a Bison, Jim was a league All-Star each year and instrumental in the "Bisons" winning three Western Canadian Inter-Collegiate Athletic Union (WCIAU) Championships in 1955, '56, and '57. At that time, there was no national university championship.
