A faculty member at Brandon College, John was instrumental in establishing the men's and women's basketball programs at the College. He coached the Men's Senior Basketball teams to City Championships in 1924 and 1925. In 1927, he began coaching the women's team that captured the Provincial Champions with a 45 to 2 win over the W.W.A.A. of Winnipeg. Two consecutive Provincial Championships followed this inaugural win in 1928 and 1929.
