1972 Senior Provincial Champions 1972 Canadian Junior Champions The 1992, 1993, 1994 U of W "Lady" Wesmen have been inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. |
The University of Winnipeg's first varsity women's basketball team started in the fall of 1971, competing in the Winnipeg Women's Senior League and playing exhibition games against other university varsity teams. In the spring of 1972, the team won the Provincial Senior Women's Championship, sweeping the University of Manitoba Bisons in the best-of-five series 54-36, 51-31, 63-43.
Because all the players were of junior age, the Lady Wesmen chose to compete for the Canadian Junior Championship in Halifax. Undefeated in the tournament, the Wesmen squeaked by the Hamilton Athenas 48-46 to win the championship. This win marked the first time a Manitoba women's basketball team brought home a national championship.
Coleen McAmmond and Angie Johnson were selected to the first All-Star Team, and Angie was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
