John Cook, a native of British Columbia, played his university basketball at UBC before moving to Winnipeg for work where he dominated the Senior Men’s League from 1964 to 1967 in a very competitive era, in which senior ball was the best around. As a member of the St. Andrews Dunlops, he was a league all-star every year and led to his team to the league championship and national tournament twice. He was also the Greater Winnipeg Senior ‘A’ Men’s Basketball League scoring champion in two of those years averaging 26.2 and 21.7 points per game. During the 1965-66 season, he once scored 49 points in a game. He was selected to the national tournament all-star team in 1964 and 1967. In addition, in 1967, he was selected to Canada’s National Team and participated in the Pan American Games that were held in Winnipeg that summer.
