St. Andrews, Winnipeg Paulins |
Roy began playing basketball at the junior level in 1939 with St. Andrews. Except for two years between 1940 and 1946, when he served in the army, he played for the St. Andrews Senior Men's Team. He held the League scoring title for two of those years.
In 1947, Roy joined the "Paulins". In his first year, he won the Most Valuable Player award, along with his nickname, "Buckets". In the next seven years, he would become one of the most feared backcourt players in Canada. Roy, who was an All Star all his playing career, helped lead the Paulins to the Canadian National Championship title and to 4th place in the World Tournament in 1954.
