A 1983 graduate of Martingrove Collegiate in Etobicoke, Ontario, Patrick was an outstanding player for the Brandon University Bobcats for four years; he played on the teams that won the Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union (CIAU) championships in 1987,1988, and 1989.
In 1988 and 1989, he was CIAU Player of the Year (earning the Mike Moser Award), a CIAU tournament All-Star, and a first-team All-Canadian.
Patrick was a second-team All-Canadian in 1987. In 1987, 1988, and 1989, he was a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) All-Star. Patrick was also a member of the national teams which represented Canada at the World University Games in Duisburg, Germany in 1989 and at the Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba in 1991.
