Before coaching basketball, Fred was a referee in the senior men's and women's leagues at the Y.M.C.A. and the Y.W.C.A. As a very successful basketball coach, he lead the Dominion Business College "Olympias" to four Provincial Senior "A" Women's Championships in 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1940.
