A graduate of Isaac Newton High School, Ed played centre throughout his playing days; remarkable, as he was only 6' 2" tall. However, his strength, exceedingly long arms, tenacity, and intelligence made him an
outstanding player. In his first three years after graduating, Ed played in the Junior League. The first year, he played for the Winnipeg Light Infantry (WLI), which went on to win the Western Canadian Championship. The next two years Ed played for the YMHA "Blues". In each of those years, he was a League All-Star and the League's Most Valuable Player.
Ed then played for two more years for the University of Manitoba "Bisons". In his first year, he was the Conference Rookie of the Year. Both years, he was a Conference All-Star and Most Valuable
Player.
