A graduate of River Heights Jr. High and Kelvin High School, Dave played his university basketball at the University of Manitoba, 1959-64. He began with the Jr. Bisons in 1959-60 where he was team captain, won the league scoring title, was voted an All-Star and league MVP. He continued his career with the Varsity Bisons and was a two-time Pat Gorman Memorial Trophy winner as the team most valuable player in 1963 and 1964. he was named to the WCIAA All-Start team in 1964 while leading the league in scoring and rebounding. Upon graduation, Dave began a 14 year career with St. Andrews in the Senior "A" League. In 1968 and 1969, the Saints won the O'Keefe Invitational Tournament in Saskatoon where he was named a tournament all-star and MVP. He participated in the Canadian Senior Championships in 14 consecutive years, 13 with St. Andrews and one with the Madison Chimneys who picked him up to play in the Winter Games in Quebec where they won a silver medal. In addition, in 1967, he had the opportunity to play against the United States Pan American Games team in Winnipeg where he faced some players who went on to great NBA careers. Throughout his career "The Beast" was a prolific scorer. It should be noted that Dave was the scoring champion in every league he played, from university to Senior Men's. The St. Andrews Super Saints were finalists seven times and Canadian Senior Men's National Champions in 1972, 1975 and 1976. Dave was also a member of the Super Saints teams that represented Canada and toured Cuba in 1972 and France and Brazil in 1978. In France, the team won one tournament and posted a record of 6 wins and 1 loss. Dave finally retired from competitive basketball in 1978 at age 37 after 14 glorious years with St. Andrews.
