Charlie began playing competitive basketball in 1918 with the Independents, a team of junior age players who were winners of the Red Cross or Dyson Trophy which was emblematic of the Manitoba Junior Championship. He went on to play with the University of Manitoba team that won the Western Canada Collegiate Championship in 1922-23. Before playing with the Winnipeg "Toilers" in the 1928-29 season, Charlie coached the University of Manitoba "Bisons" to the Western Collegiate Championship in the 1927-28 season.
